BS: Bible Study Proverbs Chapter 1

Bible studies is a fantastic way to grow deeper in your relationship with God.

An inductive bible study( studying directly from the Bible) is the way I will be blogging.

Try following by reading in your own bible first and re- reading the chapter again.( Observation), then Interpreting the text and Application( applying to your own life what you learnt)

We will do it step by step, and it wont seem so overwhelming:

So I felt led to start with Proverbs, the author was King Solomon, he wrote thousands of Proverbs.

Proverbs means in Hebrew, being compared or parallel, and in Greek , being similar or like.

So lets read Chapter 1:

Proverbs Chapter 1

The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 for gaining wisdom and instruction;
    for understanding words of insight;
for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
    doing what is right and just and fair;
for giving prudence to those who are simple,[a]
    knowledge and discretion to the young—
let the wise listen and add to their learning,
    and let the discerning get guidance—
for understanding proverbs and parables,    the sayings and riddles of the wise.[b]
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
    but fools[c] despise wisdom and instruction.
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
    and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
They are a garland to grace your head
    and a chain to adorn your neck.
10 My son, if sinful men entice you,
    do not give in to them.
11 If they say, “Come along with us;
    let’s lie in wait for innocent blood,
    let’s ambush some harmless soul;
12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave,
    and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
13 we will get all sorts of valuable things
    and fill our houses with plunder;
14 cast lots with us;
    we will all share the loot”—
15 my son, do not go along with them,
    do not set foot on their paths;
16 for their feet rush into evil,
    they are swift to shed blood.
17 How useless to spread a net
    where every bird can see it!
18 These men lie in wait for their own blood;
    they ambush only themselves!
19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
    it takes away the life of those who get it.
20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,
    she raises her voice in the public square;
21 on top of the wall[d] she cries out,
    at the city gate she makes her speech:
22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?
    How long will mockers delight in mockery
    and fools hate knowledge?
23 Repent at my rebuke!
    Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
    I will make known to you my teachings.
24 But since you refuse to listen when I call
    and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,
25 since you disregard all my advice

    and do not accept my rebuke,
26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you;
    I will mock when calamity overtakes you
27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
    when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind,
    when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer;
    they will look for me but will not find me,
29 since they hated knowledge
    and did not choose to fear the Lord.
30 Since they would not accept my advice
    and spurned my rebuke,
31 they will eat the fruit of their ways
    and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
    and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety
    and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

That's a mouthful hey! Lets read it again but a little slower this time, so that we can get the theme of this Chapter.

Well after reading this Chapter I gained the following:

In Verses 1-9 an introduction by Solomon of the purpose behind these Proverbs and how they can be applied.
Verses 10-19 Speaks of evil men enticing you.
Verses 20-33 Wisdom is compared to a woman and rebuking.

So all together this chapter 1 is about Wisdom and how it can be applied.

Are there any verses in Chapter 1 that attracted your attention?

Verses 1 - 9 The purpose - I have underlined these in red.
The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

for gaining wisdom and instruction;
    for understanding words of insight;

for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
    doing what is right and just and fair;
for giving prudence to those who are simple,[a]
    knowledge and discretion to the young—

let the wise listen and add to their learning,
    and let the discerning get guidance—
for understanding proverbs and parables,
    the sayings and riddles of the wise.[b]
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
    but fools[c] despise wisdom and instruction.
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
    and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
They are a garland to grace your head
    and a chain to adorn your neck.

Here's a question ,if you do not follow these Proverbs what does that make you
(refer to verse 7)?

Yip a Fool despises wisdom and instruction.

In verse 7 you can see Solomon wants the reader to understand that "Fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge." So you are reading Proverbs for the first time and starting from Chapter 1 and wham!, Solomon tells you, if you want wisdom ,Fear the Lord. If there is anything you must get out of Proverbs, get this Fear the Lord!

Verse 8 Father instructs and mother teaches, isn't that interesting.

Verse 9 would be a comparison Garlands and chains to Verse 8.

Verse 10 -19  Anyone would say that doesn't relate to me! Well sin can happen so fast that you end up knee deep in trouble, so Solomon's advice STAY AWAY!

Verse 18-19  it is true evil repays evil. Can you really be happy getting something in such a way?
18 These men lie in wait for their own blood;
    they ambush only themselves!
19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
    it takes away the life of those who get it.

 Verses 20-33 - The rebuke of Wisdom. Again Wisdom is compared to a woman.

Verse 23 - Repent - Throughout the Bible, God is always calling out to his People to repent and return to him, and same thing in Proverbs!
 God wants to pour into us his wisdom and make known his teachings, isn't that beautiful the way it is illustrated. Pouring into us and Knowing us,God really does these things!

Verse 24 - God calls and stretches out his hand... beautiful words
24 But since you refuse to listen when I call
    and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,

Verse 25 - Another question: In Verse 25 If you disregard his advice and don't accept rebuke, would this refer to the same person in Verse 7?
 Yip again A Fool. Remember you are learning these things from Solomon and you don't want to be a Fool.

That's it for this weeks bible study , next time we will go through Proverbs a bit faster. Enjoy the rest of your week.
